congressional races in today. The organizations are working to build a
pro-environment majority for the 111
“Connecticut
needs representatives in Congress who are committed to fighting for our
environment,” said Environment Connecticut Program Director, Christopher
Phelps. “Today, we are announcing our endorsements of Representatives Chris
Murphy and Joe Courtney because of their proven records of standing up for Connecticut’s
environment and ability to be leaders in building a stronger pro-environment
majority in Congress.”
In the race for the Connecticut
5th district between Representative Chris Murphy and State Senator
David Cappiello, Environment Connecticut announced its endorsement of
Representative Murphy.
“Representative Murphy has proven his commitment to the
environment. In his first term in Congress, Chris Murphy earned a 100%
pro-environment voting record on the Environment Connecticut scorecard,” said
Phelps. “His support for legislation mandating global warming pollution cuts to
levels that science tells us is necessary to stop global warming and his
leadership on open space and land preservation issues that are so important to
protecting Connecticut’s
natural landscape are just two of the many reasons that make Representative
Murphy the right choice for voters on Election Day.”
In the Connecticut
2nd district race between Representative Joe Courtney and Sean
Sullivan, Environment Connecticut endorsed Representative Courtney.
“Joe Courtney earned our endorsement with a 100%
pro-environment voting record on the Environment Connecticut scorecard, and a
demonstrated commitment to stopping global warming, protecting our waters, and
preserving our natural places,” said Phelps. “Representative Courtney’s legislation
to protect Eastern Connecticut’s Eight
Mile River
is an example of the sort of environmental leadership that makes him the right
choice for voters who care about the environment.”
In Connecticut’s
4th district race between Representative Christopher Shays and Jim
Himes, Environment Connecticut announced that it is choosing to make no
endorsement.
“Christopher Shays has been a leader on the environment and
worked closely with Environment Connecticut, and would normally warrant a
recommendation to voters that they support his reelection,” said Phelps.
“However, Environment Connecticut is not making any endorsement in this race
for two reasons. First, Jim Himes offers himself as a strong advocate for the
environment and would also be worthy of our recommendation. Second, Congressman
Shays has shifted from past positions and is now a leading advocate for
drilling in protected currently protected offshore waters and construction of
new nuclear power plants; both of which represent false and dangerous solutions
to creating a new energy future for America.”
