Chris Phelps advocates for clean air, clean water and open space on behalf of Environment Connecticut.

ConnPIRG’s nearly 35 years of advocacy on a range of issues has produced real results.

We’ve won victories for a cleaner and safer environment, protected consumers from rip-offs, and strengthened our democracy. When powerful special interests stood in the way of reform, ConnPIRG stepped into the fray to defend the public interest.

As a result, Connecticut has less pollution from the Sooty Six power plants, more clean cars on the road, and cleaner air for our families to breathe. Our state’s natural treasures have been preserved by programs to protect Long Island Sound, save vanishing farmland, and clean up our beaches, parks and roadways by adopting one of the first Bottle Bills in the nation.

Each of us, activists, advocates and members, who have been a part of ConnPIRG’s success these past 35 years should be proud of our accomplishments. As we look forward to the next three decades, the challenge before us is to accomplish even more as we fight for a clean, healthy environment, defend consumers, and work to strengthen our democratic institutions.

That’s why, after a lot of careful thought and planning, we have concluded that we can accomplish even more results—for consumers, democracy, and our environment—by separating our organization into two distinct groups. Environment Connecticut is the new home of ConnPIRG’s environmental work. ConnPIRG will continue to be a strong advocate for Connecticut’s families on issues like health care, identity theft, election reform, ethics and more. Environment Connecticut will continue using the same creative, result-oriented approach to meeting the challenge of protecting our state’s environment and keeping our state a wonderful place to raise a family.

I’m excited to be embarking on this new venture and grateful to you, and everyone throughout Connecticut who made it possible. Working together, I know Environment Connecticut will continue our record of effective, powerful, and successful advocacy for a cleaner, healthier environment on behalf of Connecticut’s families.
