What's New
Broadwater
Energy, backed by Shell Oil and TransCanada, wants to build a massive,
dangerous Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) processing facility in the middle
of Long Island Sound. This 10 story tall, 1,200-foot long facility
threatens to further pollute the waters of Long Island Sound, setting
back years of efforts to clean up and protect the Sound.
Background
Long
Island Sound is an important resource that enhances the quality of life
in Connecticut's communities. For generations, our families have
enjoyed the Sound's beaches, fished and boated on its waters. However,
coastal development and decades of inappropriate uses polluted the
Sound and threatened the health of its waters.
In
recent years, we have made progress in efforts to reverse the damage
and clean up the Sound. The quality of its waters has begun to improve,
helping ensure its health for the future. Now, Shell Oil and
TransCanada are threatening that progress by proposing to build a
massive, dangerous Liquefied Natural Gas processing facility called "Broadwater" in the middle of the Sound.
On
January 30, 2006, the formal application to build Broadwater was filed
with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. We can stop Broadwater,
but we need Governor Rell and other officials in Connecticut and
Washington D.C. to lead the fight to Protect Long Island Sound and stop
Broadwater.
